Hyundai's Tarun Garg has indicated that the Genesis India launch is still in the assessment phase.

Hyundai was eagerly waiting to introduce their luxury Genesis brand to India, but as per reports it could soon witness a debut in the country as the Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Hyundai, Tarun Garg has officially addressed that the company is looking to launch the Genesis brand in India.
The Korean manufacturer is evaluating the options for 2019 and last year there was confirmed news that Genesis is coming to India in the second half of 2025.
Tarun Garg further clarified by saying that, “We are strategically evaluating possibilities for the launch of Genesis, which is Hyundai’s Global luxury brand, thus we are aligned with our objectives to cater the rising demands of discerning Indian consumers, as addressed in the Hyundai’s annual report for FY2025.
Genesis India Launch Details
In 2024, Hyundai drafted a specific team to implement various marketing strategies for the introduction of the Genesis brand in India. However, Genesis is a luxury brand and has a current lineup of expensive sedans, but the company is focussing predominantly on enhancing their SUV portfolio in India. In pursuit of this goal, they went as far as to trademark the design and development of the GV80 coupe in India.
Currently Genesis has two smaller SUVs in their lineup which includes GV70 and GV60 EV and the company was considering these two SUVs for India, as these cars are also available with all-electric powertrains in various markets.
So in the first phase, the company will be going through the route of CBUs specifically to analyse the Indian market and after that SUVs could be eventually manufactured locally at Hyundai’s assembly unit in Sripereumbudur, which is located at the outskirts of Chennai.
Genesis Brand Positioning in India
If Hyundai plans to bring the GV80 as a first product in India, given its huge size, it could be positioned against luxury cars like Mercedes GLE, BMW X5 and Audi Q7, which falls within the realm of luxury segments. According to market dynamics, the company could get confidence that Luxury manufacturers are showing a steady growth in India.
However, if we analyse the Indian market, the current stake of the luxury segment is just over 1% of the total passenger vehicle market, it looks that luxury segments have a very less share, but still they are growing at an exponential rate, which is at the higher end of the spectrum.
If we look at the FY2025, the overall growth of the luxury car segment is around 3.3% compared to a 2% growth in the overall industry segment, thus it could be a perfect time for Genesis to position themselves in the Indian luxury segment, specifically at a time when luxury cars are witnessing growth, thus they need to blend a perfect car with right product strategy.
