The MG Hector Tomahawk EV is a new electric SUV from JSW MG Motor India, and the first MG model built on the company's ADAPT platform. It is available as both a five-seater and seven-seater, creating a family-oriented appeal over other electric SUVs. The Tomahawk EV features a 69.2 kWh MAGIC battery and single front-mounted electric motor, and MG claims a 517 km MIDC range, plus a 204 PS and 310 Nm output from the motor. The SUV also offers Level 2 ADAS, 15.6-inch touchscreen, V2L and V2H technology and a lifetime battery warranty for the first owner. 

However, specifications only tell part of the story, as the more important question is how the Tomahawk EV performs as an everyday family SUV. Exterior Design Review of MG Hector Tomahawk

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV receives a bold exterior design that makes the vehicle appear larger than life, almost imitating the presence of an electric competitor. The upright stance and long wheelbase combine to form a huge road presence. The automaker has been able to use bright beacon lights, illuminated badges, sculptured bumpers, and sharp character lines to create a fresh face. The side view is relatively simple, taking cues from the Tomahawk’s rotors in the form of prominent wheel arches and 18-inch Rotor alloy wheels. The Tomahawk EV also has a high ground clearance of 230 mm which makes it appear as an SUV. 

The rear end of the vehicle is also simple and contemporary, with tail-lamps forming a signature look while the tailgate is electrically operated. The five-seater provides substantially more luggage space with a 610-litre boot, the seven-seater offers 192 litres with all three rows in use, increasing to 528 litres when the third-row is folded. The third row is therefore best treated as occasional seating and independent testing has found it to be more appropriate for children than adults on longer journeys.

Battery and Range of MG Hector Tomahawk

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV comes with a 69.2kWh LFP battery pack which powers the front mounted electric motor to produce 204hp and 310Nm. MG claims a 517km MIDC range on a full battery, which is a pretty impressive figure for a large family SUV. On the early real world drives however, it appears that you will struggle to match this figure under normal commuting conditions. 

On the test drive, Hector Tomahawk managed only 4.85km/kWh during their 192km highway run, which would indicate a 336km range. Another report stated  with a mixed drive of around 200km managed to estimate an approximate 400km range. This means that under normal commuting conditions, you will not be able to achieve the 517km range MG claims. Speeds, traffic, A/C usage and even the road surface can affect your range, with your driving style also playing a role. As for the battery itself however, it seems sufficient for long distance travel with a realistic range of around 400-440 km in most conditions based on the early drives.

Driving & Performance Review of MG Hector Tomahawk

The Tomahawk EV uses a single permanent-magnet synchronous motor on the front axle, producing 150 kW (204 PS) and 310 Nm. MG claims a 0-100 km/h time of 8.2 seconds. In everyday driving the electric motor offers immediate response without gear changes, making the SUV easy to drive in city-traffic and providing enough acceleration for highway overtaking. There are four drive-modes: Eco, Standard, Sport and Custom, which alter aspects such as throttle response, braking response and steering-weight. 

Sport mode makes the response sharper while Eco gives priority to smooth delivery of power, with Standard likely to be the most suitable setting for everyday use as it provides a balance between response and efficiency. However, this is not intended to be a sporty electric SUV, and independent testing found the acceleration brisk but not particularly exciting, which is in line with the Tomahawk's family-oriented positioning.

Ride and Handling

The suspension uses MacPherson struts at the front and a multi-link arrangement at the rear. At low speeds the ride can feel firm and some poor surfaces are noticeable within the cabin, and the ride improves as the speed increases, while highway stability is one of its stronger characteristics. The steering is light and convenient in city traffic but offers limited feedback at higher speeds, and body-roll is present through corners but is controlled for a vehicle of this size and height.

Charging Review of MG Hector Tomahawk

The MG Hector Tomahawk EV can accept 7.4kW AC and up to 90kW DC fast charging. MG claims that a 10-100% AC charge takes around 12.5 hours whereas a 30-80% DC fast-charge takes about 35 minutes. The claims seem credible as early independent reviews have confirmed the 90kW DC charging claim and the 30-80% time of around 35 minutes. 

However, the actual charging time can vary depending on the battery temperature, initial state of charge and the capability of the charging station. The 90kW peak rate is actually not very high when compared with some new EVs, but it should be enough for the highway top-ups. MG's claims seem credible rather than exaggerated, but buyers should bear in mind that the 35-minute figure applies specifically to the 30-80% of the DC charging window and not the full charge.

Technology & Connected Features 

Technology is one of MG Hector Tomahawk EV’s primary selling points, providing a 15.6-inch HD touchscreen, an 8.8-inch digital driver display, support for wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, MG’s i-SMART 3.0 connected-car platform with more than 80 features, a GenAI voice assistant supporting over 30 Hinglish commands, and i-SWIPE gesture controls that let you manipulate the climate control and infotainment system.

On the road, the Tomahawk EV’s touchscreen is quick and bright, while the voice assistant and gesture controls add convenience. However, it is not an intuitive car, with many options hidden by layers of menus, and the large screen can be distracting when accessing deeper settings. Meanwhile, the Tomahawk EV offers more EV-centric technology, including V2L and V2H, as well as connected features via the MG app. In general, the car’s technology is impressive, although one must spend some time learning how to access all the functions.

The Tomahawk EV gets a lifetime high-voltage battery warranty for the first owner. In case of a change of ownership or commercial registration, the battery warranty terms are different, so buyers should check the warranty document rather than assume that the lifetime coverage transfers unchanged. MG also offers a standard vehicle warranty of three years/unlimited kilometres with extended warranty options available, according to the current programme. 

For EV owners, routine servicing is generally simpler than maintaining an ICE vehicle, as there is no engine oil, conventional gearbox or exhaust to maintain. Still, tyres, brakes, suspension components, air-con systems and other normal vehicle components require regular inspection.
