The BMW Group is partnering with Mistral AI, advancing the use of Artificial Intelligence (AI) in crash simulations. Their objective is to analyse virtual crash tests faster and improve the passive vehicle safety through targeted support.

The physical crash tests lead to extensive virtual simulations. When the new car is about to hit a barrier in real life, it has already gone through myriad impact tests in the digital world. Each week, BMW is testing thousands of virtual crash simulations, further generating insights into vehicles to be evaluated during their development.

This process generates vast amounts of data which includes material behaviour, deformation patterns, and distribution of impact forces of the vehicle. Thus there is a memory built from thousands of crash simulations that can exceed 1 petabyte.

The Use of AI for Crash Simulations

Thus to avoid this unnecessary data, the BMW Group and Mistral AI are coming together to accelerate the application of AI in crash simulations. Their ultimate aim is to utilize AI to analyse vast volumes of simulation data faster and identify patterns at a rapid stage and provide more accurate data-driven development decisions.
