Chinese manufacturer BYD has upgraded its Blade battery in six years and has also launched a new 1,500 kW Flash charger. This second generation charger has the capacity to charge from 10-70% in just 5 minutes, thus achieving 97% SOC in just 9 minutes of rapid charge.

One of the most interesting features of this new charger is that even in low temperatures of -30 Degrees C, which hampers the charging efficiency, the manufacturer is claiming that 20-97% of charge can be done only in 12 minutes.

BYD new Blade Battery and Flash Charger Technical Details

The latest version of the Blade Battery improves energy efficiency by 5% over the first-gen unit, resulting in internal heat generation and maximise heat regulation. It is also equipped with a high-speed channel and advanced thermal management system which ensures optimum temperature of the batteries in order to extract maximum range on single charge.BYD 2nd-Gen Blade BatteryAccording to BYD Chairman, Wang Chuanfu stated that new Blade-battery powered Z9GT and U7 models will offer an enhanced range of 1,000 Km, as more models across other subsidiaries are also introduced with the new battery unit. The battery is also certified through various safety tests that has more value than China’s national standards.

EV Adoptions may Increase

These innovations will further increase EV adoption at a rapid pace as these new technologies have solved major issues of owning EVs such as reduced waiting times and improvements in charging times, which could further boost EV adoption.

Talking about India, the current EV penetration is around 5%, thus it will be interesting to see how BYD’s new blade battery will perform in India and how much sales it could bring from the majority of audience still considering EVs as a secondary powertrain.
