The Nexon EV is one of the most popular electric cars in its segment, as it started the journey of electrification by being the first electric car from Tata. Our team at AllAboutEVs noted down the experience of a 55,000 Km journey in just over a year with its Nexon EV.

The owner, Harsh is not just a city-focussed person as he likes adventure and has done various long distance trips from plains of Agra to rough terrains of Spiti and all the way to Kolkata, spanning thousands of kilometers. Thus he shared his experience on how it is to own a Tata Nexon EV for a long time.

Nexon Battery Performance: After 55,000 Km

The biggest fear of a battery owner is battery degradation over a long time, which is an inevitable process. The users generally come across questions like “Will I need to replace the battery in 3 years?”. Thus it is very important to know Harsh’s take on this.

After clocking more than 55,000 Km, he checked his battery’s State of Health (SOH) of his battery, and the result was 99%, Yes even we can’t believe our eyes after finding out this! The battery was degraded by just 1% after being fast-charged repeatedly on highways across India.

Battery Parameters: This just ensures an impressive thermal management system (TMS) in the Nexon EV (45 kWh variant). The BMS (Battery Management System) and the LFP chemistry are also showing exceptional performance against Indian heat and heavy usage on highways.

Real-World Range: Highway Vs City

Manufacturers boast a lot about their cars, but real driving gives a clear perspective of the claims done by the company. Harsh was clear about his expectations related to the car’s real world range. Here’s what he got on different stretches of road.

Nexon EV Ownership review

  • Highway Range: He achieved a healthy figure of 290-300 Km on highways, while maintaining decent speeds.
  • Conservative Driving: Harsh also drove sedately at the constant speed of 60-70 km/hr, and the car happily provided 350-370 Km of efficient range.
  • Buffer Strategy: He also smartly planned his stops, and plugged to the charger with about 15-20% SOC (State of Charge), reducing the fear of range anxiety.

NOTE: He told us that even after clocking 55,000 Km, he experienced a negligible drop in real-world range, which is roughly 6-10 km difference, which is barely noticeable.

The Economics: Saving 3.5 Lakhs!

Harsh also did an amazing EV maths, as he saved roughly ₹3.0 to ₹3.5 Lakhs in fuel costs as compared to his previous diesel/ petrol cars.

Nexon Purchase Price Savings
Total Cost of Purchase: 16.40 Lakhs  ₹3.5 Lakhs in 14 months. This means the car is smartly paying for itself. He even mentioned that using paid DC fast chargers which are even more expensive than Home charging, the running cost is fraction of ICE vehicle.

Nexon EV Service Experience: Tata’s Reality

Harsh’s experience with Tata is quite long now and it wouldn't be an honest review without discussing service. Harsh rated 3 out of 5, while the car was robust, the dealership experience was not that great. He accepted that he had several fights with dealerships at the start, but now found a service center that serves him better.

Summary: The product is rock solid, but the service network still has loopholes and has a scope for development.

Charging Infrastructure & Long Trips

According to Harsh’s perspective, The City Car is a fake reputation for EVs as he has successfully done

Spiti Valley: Harsh put the Nexon EV on sharp inclines and rough terrains with as low as 6% battery (Although a tough situation, but he survived)

Kolkata & South India: He found ample charging stations on major highways. However, according to his experience, he provided golden advice to use Apps like Plugshare, which tells the exact location of the charger and always checks the specific charger app (Tata Power, Statiq, Jio-BP) in order to track real-time charger status.

Final Opinion

Harsh’s experience has been great with Nexon EV and he isn’t selling his car anytime soon. In fact, he calls it his “Lucky”car. The sheer smoothness of the car, the instant torque, and low cost of running have made him addicted to going on long trips. He even said that he doesn’t miss diesel cars and can’t go back to the vibration.

AllAboutEVs Take: For us all that matters is the data point which Harsh shared with us. If an EV can successfully surpass 55,000 Km of Indian Highways with 99% battery health, the future is definitely promising for electric mobility.
