SUN Mobility introduced a modular multi-battery swapping solution for the Tata Starbus EV at the Prawaas 5.0 event.

SUN Mobility introduced its advanced multi-battery swapping solution for heavy electric vehicles (HEVs). The modular battery was integrated with the Tata Starbus 12-meter electric bus platform at Prawaas 5.0, organised in Gandhinagar, Gujarat.

The system includes an AIS-038 certified modular battery architecture that allows the swapping of two battery packs simultaneously under five minutes of time. The platform also supports 50 kWh and 100 kWh battery configurations, which are designed specifically for commercial vehicles ranging from 3-tonne to 55-tonne gross vehicle weight (GVW). 

SUN Mobility has stated that they also provide a Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) model that separates battery ownership from the vehicle, which allows the fleet operators to pay for the energy usage, instead of paying huge costs for the battery. 

According to the company, this approach will reduce the upfront costs and increase the affordability by shifting the battery maintenance and replacement costs to the swap operator. As per SUN Mobility, this platform can support buses from 7 meters to 13.5 meters. 

The company has also clarified that its battery swapping technology is protected by more than 275 patents registered across electric 2-wheelers, 3-wheelers, cars, and heavy electric vehicles. 

The CEO of SUN Mobility, Ashok Agarwal, expressed his views on this and said, “The next phase of electric adoption is not just solely on electric vehicles, but even by different energies that power them. Our first Modular Multi-Battery Swappable solution integrated with the Tata Starbus EV platform has defined how battery swapping solutions can seamlessly be used for city transit, staff, and intercity fleets.”
