Maruti's latest EV may rival the Tata Tiago EV.

Maruti Suzuki is all set to diversify its EV lineup with the introduction of a new model that will be competing with the Tiago EV in India. The upcoming electric car is expected to be positioned below the e Vitara and could be priced aggressively under Rs 10 Lakh, thus positioning it in the budget segment of the Indian EV market. 

As the e Vitara started Maruti’s journey in the electric vehicle space, the new model is expected to be highly affordable and will be catering specifically to consumers who will be making the switch to EVs for the first time. 

Maruti Designing a Smaller EV

However, the Japanese manufacturer has not revealed the name or body style of its upcoming affordable EV yet. The positioning of the upcoming EV suggests that it will be smaller and more accessible than the e Vitara. 

The company is planning to bring a small hatchback of compact crossover, thus focussing on keeping the purchase price in check by introducing EVs in the price which makes them highly attractive. This will help Maruti to compete in a segment where higher upfront costs are the major concern for consumers. 

Thus by placing the car in sub Rs 10 lakh price point will make the company capable of reaching a much wider audience than the e Vitara. 

Maruti upcoming electric vehicle to provide more Range

Maruti has not revealed the technical details of the new EV, as the company has not confirmed its battery capacity, power output, or driving range. However, the car is designed exclusively for urban use. Thus it is expected that Maruti could relatively use a smaller battery pack that will help Maruti to price its car effectively, while still offering more range for urban commuting. 

Thus we can expect a real-world range of around 200-300 Km on a single charge, although the exact figures are yet to be seen once the company announces its exact specifications. 

Localisation Could Reduce Prices 

However, battery costs are still one of the biggest concerns while developing an affordable electric car. Thus Maruti Suzuki is focussing on local sourcing. The company is working towards developing an effective local EV supply chain which covers batteries, motors and other electrical components. 

Thus greater localisation could help in reducing manufacturing costs and allow Maruti to offer its new EV at an affordable price. This is particularly important if the company wants to position the model below the Rs 10 Lakh mark.
