Delhi is set to witness an expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure as the Ministry of Heavy Industries (MHI) has approved 382 locations for installing EV charging stations. The proposal falls under the Delhi EV Policy 2026 which seeks to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the national capital.

According to Delhi Power Minister Ashish Sood, the Delhi government had initially shortlisted 456 locations through the Revenue Department and Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC). However, the MHI approved only 382 locations after a detailed review process in the last three months, following the notification of the Delhi EV Policy 2026 on June 30. Various categories of EVs such as two-wheelers, three-wheelers, and four-wheelers have been taken into consideration while finalizing the 382 approved EV charging locations. Moreover, the power availability and grid requirement have also been taken into account so that the proposed EV charging sites are realistic and actually utilized.

First 160-180 Sites to Go for Tender

The Delhi government will soon start the bidding process for the first 160 to 180 high-readiness sites. The KPMG Project Management Unit (PMU) has been roped in for the smooth implementation of the Delhi EV Policy. The expansion of the charging infrastructure is expected to happen before the Delhi government’s target date of January 1, 2027, which mandates 100% electric registration for new three-wheelers and N1-light commercial vehicles. The target date for two-wheelers is April 1, 2028. As of now, there are 1,919 charging stations and 2,452 charging points recorded on the official EV portal of Delhi, apart from the proposed expansion.
